The effects of aging have been well documented in human beings and similar effects are seen in dogs. Senior dogs are very much like older people. Did you know that like humans, dogs can get osteoarthritis, diabetes, renal failure and more? Canine rehabilitation focuses on conditions of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems that affect aging senior dogs. Osteoarthritis is the most common musculoskeletal condition in older dogs that causes difficulty getting around as they age. There are also several conditions of the neurologic system like intervertebral disc disease, degenerative myelopathy, similar to ALS in humans, and even memory loss like not recognizing familiar places or people. Canine Rehabilitation professionals can help pet parents navigate these debilitating conditions that can rob your pet of a good quality of life. I believe pet parents should be educated on the normal aging progress, nutrition, pain management, and appropriate exercise to help their pets live long active lives. Knowledge + Action = Power. Stay tuned to learn more about how you can help your senior dog live a long active life!
