What is Degenerative Myelopathy

Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) is a disease affecting the spinal cord, resulting in slowly progressive hind limb weakness and paralysis. The symptoms result from degeneration of the white matter of the spinal cord.

           Have you ever heard of this disease? It is similar to some forms of the human Lou Gehrig’s Disease; also known as ALS. Just like with any condition, we hope you will never have to experience it with your pup, but it is good to be educated; just in case your dog or someone’s you know experiences any of the symptoms listed.
But first, What is it?
Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) is a disease affecting the spinal cord, resulting in slowly progressive hind limb weakness and paralysis. The symptoms result from degeneration of the white matter of the spinal cord.

        What are Some Early Signs?

• Their hind paws "knuckle" or turn under so that the dog walks on the tops of the feet.
• Their hindquarters appear to sway when standing still.

• They fall over easily if nudged.

• Their hind feet seem to scrape the ground when walking.

• They have difficulty getting up from a lying position.
  
  ​How is DM Diagnosed?
  DM will be suspected on the basis of breed, medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests. X-rays, an MRI or other spinal imaging will rule out problems such as IVDD, hip dysplasia, and arthritis. If one of these other problems is also present, it can contribute to the dogs loss of function of their back legs. There are also genetic tests to determine if your dog even carries the gene for DM, while not a definitive diagnosis, it can aide in decision making. It can be quite upsetting to get a DM diagnosis however the good news is this is not a disease known for pain.
  
  How can DM be Helped?
  Unfortunately there is no cure at this time. The main goal is increase and maintain muscle mass to keep the dog on its feet for as long as possible. Canine Rehabilitation has been shown to prolong quality of life and preserve muscle mass. Studies are also suggesting laser therapy along with an anti-inflammatory diet can also prolong their life. The dog should be kept as physically active as possible for as long as possible.
