Canine myo-manipulative functional therapy is canine massage therapy that focuses to restore proper function to the body. Myo-manipulative means making changes to the muscle and functional therapy is defined as addressing dysfunctions in the body's ability to move optimally. Canine Massage therapy is a branch of massage therapy that specifically promotes health in canines. Massage can help with a plethora of things including anxiety, stiff joints and muscles, pain, and circulation.

How does massage work? Your dog will feel immediate effects of relief from pain, decreased tension within the muscles, and relaxation due to calming of the nerves. Once pain has subsided healing can begin, mechanical effects of massage alleviate tension to improve stiff joints while  increasing circulation and lymphatic flow to assist in waste removal from the tissues. This allows them to heal.

Who can massage my dog? Canine massage therapists have special training in providing massage to your pet. Certifications ensure your pet is receiving quality care from someone who is knowledgeable to the effects of massage at the physiologic level. Further they have an understanding when and if massage is appropriate for your canine friend. Certain underlying conditions can be aggravated by massage techniques, and can be dangerous to your pup.

Can I massage my dog? Yes! dogs love to be touched. Studies have shown dogs that were stroked had a decreased physiologic response to stress. Further dogs that were handled more showed increased development in the brain and learned faster as compared to those not handled. Massaging your dog can also strengthen your bond with them. However, It is always a good idea to check with your veterinarian before beginning a massage regimen.

Not sure if massage is right for your dog? Look for signs like stiffness, limping, difficulty getting up and down, decreased mobility, decreased interest in playing or going on walks, poor agility, or simply aging before their time. A canine myo-manipulative functional therapist can help determine and address the underlying issues that may be causing long standing problems that affect mobility.

Canine massage reduces muscle tension and promotes circulation to decrease pain and restore function, as a complementary part of your pets regular veterinary care.
